Google Nexus One

Google announced today that they will be phasing out retail sales of the Nexus One on their phone website. It will continue as a showcase for Google Android phones. While the Android OS has been quite successful, the Google online retail initiative has not.

Having only one wireless carrier as a partner, T-Mobile, and a website that sold mostly to the geekiest of Android fans, sales were not nearly as strong as had been anticipated. While there was the option of shelling out full price ($ 600.00) for an unlocked version, as more Android phones came to market with comparable specs, that became less viable as an option for most.

The phone will still be available online until there are sufficient quantities in retail outlets, at which time online sales will be cut off.
